English Language

Students will be grounded in the more foundational aspects of English Language – reading, writing, and grammar.

  • They will be introduced to the different practical applications and uses of English in everyday life including and especially through the means of watching and understanding the news, both local and international.

  • They will also be taught to understand grammar and its uses properly which will serve as a springboard for Upper Secondary – O Level skills.

  • In terms of writing, they will learn all the different formats and styles of Situational Writing and the various types of compositions - Narrative/Personal Recount, Descriptive, Expository, Discursive and Argumentative Essays.

  • We will look through the different parts of the Comprehension – all three different texts, the Visual Text, Narrative Passage and Factual Passage. Students will learn the different types of questions and how best to approach and answer all the requirements of the question.

English Literature

Some of the things covered include —

  • Characterisation – how characters in a story or play are created, how they interact with other characters, and how they are described. What do they feel and do and what are they motivated by.

  • Questions for set text comprises of — What is the kind of relationship between two characters? Is it happy/sad/full of tension/fearful/angry/etc.

  • Literary devices like similes, metaphors and personification and many more. 

  • Students will catch the point and happenings of the poem or story. Learning all the devices and characterisation must lead them to know what the subject or main point of the reading is.

  • Writing — PEEL structure. Learn to write in a systematic, logical and comprehensible way.
